What's the best car for the price based on performance, reliability, repair costs, etc? I am looking to buy a car but want to get the most bang for my buck.

As an previous owner of a 3 series, my answer is inevitably bias.
The 3 is seriously a proper genuine German engineering marvel. It gets great fuel economy if you are not too heavy footed. And if you do get heavy footed, the power and performance from it is simply breath taking. It will out handle everything else in its class with ease, and be more reliable than most. It is a great all rounder.
The Mercedes is nice, but to be honest, the car looks old fast. And its not as sporty as the BMW, nor is it as fun to drive. Its a car you can see buying for your grand parents. Very comfortable for long journeys.
The IS 250 is not as nice in my opinion. I had to choose between the IS250 and the 3 series before i bought the BMW. If you dont get it fully loaded, its not worth having it. Lexus = luxoury, and without the luxoury, your not really getting much. And it you do shell out couple extra thousand for the luxoury, it adds so much weight, it becomes even more under powered. And if you pull out more cash and get the IS 350, the fuel economy might not be very nice. But its the most reliable, and because its a Toyota, you can get the parts for fairly cheap price..but you cant let them know you have a Lexus, they will give you Toyota parts for a higher price.
The G37 is not too bad...other than the engine. Nissan/Infiniti is not really known to make great engines. It looks good, and performs well, it makes a great cruiser. But if you push it too hard, there are cooling problems, reliability problems..etc. All the problems starts to appear if you abuse it too hard. Its got what it takes to be a good car, but it just doesnt want to, if you know what i mean,
I love how everybody answers the question with hardly a shread of information. Are you buying used, new, whats you budget, which MB or BMW model specifically.. all of this info is pertinent.
I own a M3, have owned both an IS300( which I turbo'd) and G35 as well as a MB C55, so I have been in all the family's.
They are all good cars.. if you like the Lexus don't go after the 250, that thing is slower than molasses. I would get the IS350 which has 306hp, its a much more capable vehicle. I would also not get the C300 in favor of the C350, the base engines in most of the lines are pretty mediocre.
I personally find the G37 to be ugly and while being nice to drive the throttle is SO touchy.
Resale on any of them will be good and another important consideration is that if your buying new BMW has a 4 year all inclusive warranty, no maintenance costs, no nothin'. Made It into cherry condition. Painted hot-rod flat black.Straight 6 cylinder m-power 3.8 ltr.engine installed. Cylinders bored to a few mm. 6 speed trans. Custom cam. custom headers..heavy duty clutch with ultra-lite flywheel..vacuum sports exhaust system [acts as a turbo], M-5 computer chip,cold air intake,reconstructed suspension with extra big struts,space under hood for nitro,19 in. wheels with 12 inch wide tires.. Speed tested at Immokalee race-way...from a dead start 0-70 in 4.9sec.
Know this, the car @ 3,500rpm puts out 417hp, while the car iiself weighs only 2,300 pounds.

So..
The result? I bought a quality car [the 1995 BMW m-3, one of its fastest models] for $18,999. I transformed the car so it is is for all purposes a brand new car. I spent about $12,000-$14,000 in modifications.
The result?
NO ONE comes close to me on the road in regards to speed and performance. The cold air intake allows me to even get around 22mpg at 100mph. [ yes, I have been to driving school a couple times :) ] I am sure if driven at reasonable speeds, as say 65mph, I bet it would get close to 27+mpg.
But just think; for about $33,000: I got a car that easily puts down ANY stock model car..yes!..even the any top line Porshe!

Beyond any doubt get a BMW E-60 M-5 with a supercharger.

You posted this in the BMW section so unfortunatley the biased opinions amongst BMW will Dominate the others. Over all the best and most honest answer here is the Infiniti G37 sedan. Do the math, the Infiniti G37 sedan prices at $33,250 for a standard base model with 328 HP standard, Bi-xenon headlights, Bose sounds sytem, Powerd Front Seats, intelligent key, LCD information screen not to mention the G37 is the largest sedan in this segment opposed to it rivals like the Lexus IS, Mercedes C-class, BMW 3 series and Audi A4. The BMW 328i sedan prices at $33,150 standard equipped with Halogen headlights, Manual seats, a boring dull interior, nothing that wows you at the front unless you opt for the NAVI package which is thousands more, not to mention smaller inside, the only good thing about the BMW is that your covered for 4 years or 50K miles on maintenance cost which covers oil changes and other things etc, this does not make the 3 series the better car, this is simply the advantage of owning one, you might save money while owning one but in terms of getting more "bang for your buck" on the car? not really. Basically everything that comes standard on a 2010 G37 sedan you would have to opt for on a 2010 BMW 328i sedan. The BMW 328i only produces 230 HP which is lousy for a car at this price point, the higher trimed BMW 335i sedan prices at $40,600 with 300 HP and it still doesnt even produce as much power as a standard G37 sedan. The Lexus IS250 Despite being cheaper is a very bland and conservative sedan but it still offers a luxurious supple ride all while sacrificing performance as you may know it is the slowest luxury sedan in its class with 204 HP at $32,145. The IS250 is impressive at some points but in terms of a driving experience youll probably get more Juice out of a Volkswagen Beetle. The Mercedes C-class never leaves luxury astray, after all it is a Mercedes. The interior is beautiful and welcoming but the standards offered in a C-class do not justifie its $33,990 price tag, the C-class has a 228 HP engine, standards are similar to a BMW 3 series except Mercedes is actually generous enough to provide you with powered seats standard opposed to BMW 3 series. The 2010 C-class was actually facelifted for 2010 and badged a 2011 Model which now has the Mercedes LED signiture daytime running lights which make the car look stunning but that still doesnt justifie the Price tag. Personally I would take the 2010 Infiniti G37 sedan, it has everything a driver would want and need, the question is do you like the way it looks? Because other then that the G37 is the perfect sedan. (In the links are images of the actual Standard sedans at an entry class price) Even if money wasnt not a factor I would still take the G37 or the Mercedes C-class. Dont get me wrong The BMW 3 series is a nice car but its quickly become over rated and unamussing.
